Best of 2022
December 2022
Do you feel like we are living during times that are more volatile but less turbulent at the same time?
One the one hand, more violence, more misunderstanding. The Earth is still dying from our thoughtless actions. In words of the great Paul Simon, "still crazy after all these years". On the other hand (and on a more individual level), this was the year of increasing certainty: I completed Master's, found a new job, moved to a (more or less) permanent place.
I liked the year in general, but here are some of the more specific things I liked.
Books
- The Most Important Thing by Howard Marks – If you have been in the stock market this year, I am sorry. Unless you read this book before and knew all things that you mustn't do as an investor. Great read, but painful in light of the mistakes I had made.
- Ак-Орда. История Казахского ханства by Радик Темиргалиев – He somehow managed to write about the complicated history of Kazakhs in a non-boring way. Never was a fan of history, let alone the twisted history of the Saks.
Music
TV shows
- Avatar: The Last Airbender – Did some catching up with the childhood.
- Extraordinary Attorney Woo – K-drama is so dangerously addictive.
Movies
- Don't F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer – A mindblowingly good documentary.
- Planet of the Apes – This film was made in 1968, but rings true today – the mark of a masterpiece.
- My Sassy Girl – I have nothing to hide... I teared up a bit.
- A Taxi Driver – About the uprising in Korea in 1980. Brilliant film.
